Digging up some Butter Boletes (Butyriboletus specie) hidden under a mound of dirt or mushroom hump (shrump). I found these at ~7,000 feet in the mountains of California growing in association with Red Fir. They are delicious meaty mushrooms with a mild sweet nutty flavor, excellent in a variety of dishes. #mushroomasmr #mushroomharvesting #mushroomhunting #mushroomforaging #butterboletes #butyriboletus #mycology #fungi #fascinatedbyfungi | Fascinated By Fungi

Found a roadside King Bolete (Boletus edulis var. grandedulis) and explained why I tap these mushrooms. Also included is some ASMR footage of me trimming up this beautiful specimen. Kings are mycorrhizal with pine trees and love growing in grassy habitat near edges of paths, trails, and roads. Keep an eye out for the fly agaric, peppery boletes, and the spy as indicator species.Apparently the portrait lens on my iPhone has been broken for awhile, that explains the weird black line on the left. Satan’s Bolete (Rubroboletus eastwoodiae), a chonky bolete with a reddish to brownish cap, deep red pores, and thick stem with well defined reticulation (netting/webbing) and a bulbous base: This is a mycorrhizal species that occurs in association with oaks. The flesh stain blue when exposed to oxygen, but not quite as quickly or as darkly as other red-pored boletes. This is a deadly toxic species that contains bolesatine, a glycoprotein that can accumulate in the liver, inhibiting protein synth

Here’s a side by side comparison of the #SatansBolete #Rubroboletuseastwoodiae and #LiverBolete #Suillellusamygdalinus, two red-pored blue staining boletes that are both having a fantastic season thanks to the rains we have been having. . In the previous two posts I have focused on the particular characteristics of each mushroom. In this post I am comparing the two. This Rubroboletus species is defined by its pinkish cap, red to orange to yellowish pores (they fade as they older), and big bulbou

Red Stemmed Bitter Bolete (Caloboletus rubriceps). This is a mycorrhizal species that grows with conifers (incense cedar in this case). It’s very bitter and not normally eaten. Blue staining reaction is due to oxidation of an organic acid (not active). #mushroomasmr #caloboletus #bluestaining #bolete #slicingasmr #mushrooms #mycology #fungi #fascinatedbyfungi
