The sights and sounds of history came to life this past weekend in Durango as a cadre of dedicated Museum donors climbed aboard for a special excursion over the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNGRR), pulled by the Colorado Railroad Museum’s iconic Rio Grande Southern (RGS) steam locomotive No. 20. Rio Grande Southern 20 is a historic steam locomotive built in 1899 by the Schenectady Locomotive Works in New York. It originally went to work for the Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad. After the F&CC shut down in 1915, the 20 was sold to the Rio Grande Southern, remaining in service between Durango and Ridgeway, Colorado until the RGS was officially shut down in 1952.
